Welcome to Chronicles of Technology in Suburbia. I have created a separate technology journal with the intention of sharing bits of my experiences in tinkering with technology (Linux, open source firmware, open source systems management, computer hardware) as well as occasional opinions on such topics. I plan to write regularly about technology topics in this space.
Background
I am a systems research and development engineer with a long history of working on Linux and systems hardware development. While I have been publishing and presenting at technical conferences over the years, I recently decided to write on technology topics with more regularity. Like everything else, there are three reasons for doing this:
- For decades (starting with Yahoo search engine days and UUNET news groups), I have been reaping the benefit of people sharing their experiences in tinkering. My first Linux tinkering project in 1994 itself benefited from someone writing about how Microsoft Sound System (MSS) works and making it available on the internet. This is a way to give back something in return.
- Tinkering culture is much more pervasive in the west. Because of that, it is also much easier to procure components and get information. Some of my friends in other countries have built much fancier home labs thanks to cheap used hardware from Ebay (even SPARC and PARISC servers) and more power being available at home from utility companies. I want to encourage more people, specially students in India exploring electronics and computer science, to have more hands-on lab experience. This is my effort to show that a reasonably practical home lab can be built in Indian urban environment (or at a small university department).
- I am constantly doing new things and it is just not possible to remember everything over a long period of time. So, I am writing things down for my own benefit. I might be the biggest beneficiary of this journal 🙂
Summary
Apart from tinkering builds, I plan to share tidbits from new software work that I might be doing in future. My social media handles are :
